Resilience is an internal process and one’s own strength of adapting well in the face of unexpected things happening around us. A manager or leader needs it when things go up and down. It could be a time when market behave unfavourably, economy fluctuates, team member is absent, pressure of deadline is disturbing or working to turn around company.

In day to day life too we need resilience to face adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress — such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace and financial stressors. I mean “bouncing back” from difficult experiences.

Research has shown that resilience is ordinary, not extraordinary. People commonly demonstrate resilience. Being resilient does not mean that a person doesn’t experience difficulty or distress. Emotional pain and sadness are common in people who have suffered major adversity or trauma in their lives. In fact, the road to resilience is likely to involve considerable emotional distress.

Building better resilience takes time, effort, commitment, and focus. It will not just happen to you overnight, and it won’t just happen to you if read a book about resilience or begin work with a therapist. It’s a process that will take months to learn and master.  With growing cultural diversity, the public has greater access to a number of different approaches to building resilience.” This may be something to be aware of in your resilience journey. Don’t be frustrated by this, because unlike your eye colour or height, resilience is sometime a trait but other times a skill that you can readily enhance with patience, persistence and training.

So, resilience is not a trait that people either have or do not have. They can learn, develop and strengthen it. It involves behaviours, thoughts and actions that can be learned and developed in anyone.

Some studies show that the primary factor in resilience is having caring and supportive relationships within and outside the family. Relationships that create love and trust, provide role models and offer encouragement and reassurance help bolster a person’s resilience. Resilience involves maintaining flexibility and balance in your life as you deal with stressful circumstances and traumatic events. This happens in several ways, including:

Letting yourself experience strong emotions, and also realizing when you may need to avoid experiencing them at times in order to continue functioning. Stepping forward and taking action to deal with your problems and meet the demands of daily living, and also stepping back to rest and re energize yourself. This comes naturally when you are full of love and others trust in you.

Spending time with loved ones to gain support and encouragement, and also nurturing yourself. Relying on others, and also relying on yourself build natural resilience.

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Neuro refers to your neurology; Linguistic refers to language; programming refers to how that neural language functions. In other words, learning NLP is like learning the language of your own mind! Let’s make this simpler with an example. NLP training in India is extremely popular in the self-help, therapy, sports, education, coaching, performance and corporate worlds where it is learnt through nlp coaching. In fact, it is used in so many areas of life that it would probably easier to list where it isn’t used!

Everybody has resilience. It’s just a question of how much and how well you put it to good use in your life. Resilience doesn’t mean the person doesn’t feel the intensity of the event or problem. Instead, it just means that they’ve found a pretty good way of dealing with it more quickly than others. Resilience makes you feel good and feel good for no damn reason.

Do you want to feel good and keep going when going gets tough? Build resilience.
